History of Fern Hall: Fern Hall is a magnificent elegant and richly historic stone lakefront country mansion located on Crystal Lake, Clifford Township, Pennsylvania. Fern Hall’s history is quite unique. The beginnings of Fern Hall go all the way back to the birth of this country. The property was deeded during the mid 1770s to Samuel Meredith, who would go on to become the second treasurer of the United States. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was the seller for five shillings, and the deal was brokered by Benjamin Franklin, who handled all real estate transactions for the Commonwealth at that time. In the 1820’s, Sylvester Johnson, a farmer from Connecticut, purchased the property. Several decades later, in 1885, three of his sons James Wood, Robert Wood, and Edward Mead Johnson, began selling their own line of surgical dressing. In 1887, Johnson & Johnson was incorporated, and the company would go on to revolutionize sanitary practices in the U.S. The Johnson's Crystal Lake property sat barren for years, until James Wood Johnson decided to build his family retreat there. Designed with a combination of English and French Manor styles, Fern Hall was officially completed in 1916.
