This grand Victorian has been a local landmark since its construction at the end of the 19th Century. The current owners spent more than nine months restoring the grand lady and opened the doors to The Brookville Inn in September of 2006. Since that time The Brookville Inn has turned into a thriving business and gained a reputation for good service and quality accommodations with the perfect blend of comfort and style.
Located in the scenic Whitewater Valley of southeastern Indiana, the Inn attracts guests from a wide geographic area including Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky and is not dependent on any one single source of business. Brookville Lake, with over 1 million visitors a year, is the keystone to tourism in the area and is complemented by countless other outdoor adventures, including hiking, sailing, canoeing and fishing. Historic Metamora, the Wolf Creek Habitat, riverboat casinos and the Creation Museum are examples of a diverse range of area attractions. Business travelers continue to be a steady and growing source of revenue for the Inn as well as guests associated with Miami University, and individuals returning to the Brookville area for genealogy research, family visits, reunions, festivals, etc.
In addition to the exquisite public rooms and fully-equipped guest rooms, there are owner’s quarters in the rear of the building with a full bath, kitchen, and bedroom. A rear staircase and hallway provide easy access to guest rooms and public areas. The library doubles as an office for the Inn and a family room for the owners when its 8’ pocket doors are closed in the evenings. The owner’s quarters also include a 3-car garage and a private fully-fenced back yard with extensive landscaping, fountain, deck and patio.
During the renovations in 2006, every effort was made to keep the Victorian splendor while adding 21st century amenities. The entire house was stripped of 100 years of wallpaper, and the plaster walls were skimmed and sanded. The original woodwork, picture rail moldings, three sets of wood fretwork, two sets of eight-foot pocket doors, wood floors, grand staircase and three sets of magnificent stained glass windows were saved. The leaded glass window in the front door was completely taken apart and releaded. Additional lighting, four new bathrooms, a new high efficiency gas furnace and a 2nd floor heat pump were added. New windows were installed except in the formal rooms, a gas burning coal basket was added to the dining room fireplace and new flooring was installed where the original could not be saved. In 2009 the kitchen was enlarged and renovated while maintaining the warmth and character of the 19th century. 42” wood cabinetry with under-the-counter lighting, open wood shelving, HD dimensional countertops, and a bead board backsplash were added. The huge walk-in pantry with floor to ceiling shelving remains. Outside a rear covered deck and adjoining concrete-stamped patio were added along with a custom wood privacy fence. Extensive landscaping was done including the addition of a seven-foot high fountain surrounded by a hedge of boxwood. The entire house was painted inside and out to bring about a sense of casual elegance highlighted by the original splendor of the grand Victorian age.
Both the main and second levels have ten-foot ceilings. Most rooms have original eight-foot solid wood five panel doors and hardware, stained door and window casements, stained corner beads, seven-inch stained baseboard. The formal rooms also retain the original picture rail moldings.
Guest rooms have private baths, top-of-the-line carpeting, rough-in for ceiling fan/light with wall switch, ductwork for the attic heat pump/cac unit as well as the original ductwork for the gas forced air furnace. All are pre-wired for cable and have armoires which remain with the house. The fifth room has no bath and is only rented in conjunction with another. Owner/agent.
