The Gunn House Hotel is a 22 room historic hotel built in 1850 for Dr. Lewis C. Gunn who was lured to the area to seek his fortune in the California gold mines. Using local labor he built the area’s first two-story adobe building. The original structure has changed and expanded in both size and purpose over the years into the beautiful three-story hotel that it is today. The hotel has a prime downtown Sonora location on the main thoroughfare that connects to Hwy 49, which is the main north/south tourist highway for the Sierra gold country. The property is centrally located for guests visiting Yosemite National Park and Dodge Ridge ski resort.

The current owners have painstakingly restored, upgraded and beautifully decorated with antique furniture, every room in the hotel. Each room is unique and a pleasure to behold with private bathrooms that are larger than expected for a hotel of this era.

At one point in time the hotel had a bar and restaurant, the current owner has converted the old dining room to 2 guest rooms and the bar became what is now the lovely and large breakfast room overlooking the outdoor pool area. The breakfast room can also double as a small meeting room for extra income. There still remains a commercial kitchen and large pantry, which is currently used to prepare the guest breakfast each morning.

The hotel is only being lightly marketed. They have an outstanding web site, but they do not use any 3rd party websites for reservations such as Booking.com, Hotwire or bedandbreakfast.com, nor do they belong to AAA. They do however rely heavily on TripAdvisor on which they are continually ranked either #1 or #2 out of 8 hotels in Sonora. The hotel has also received TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence award for 2014. Once you see the hotel you will understand why. The room rates are low for a property of this caliber. The property is not being marketed as a true bed and breakfast (which it is), but as a hotel. If more emphasis was placed on the bed and breakfast aspect and a stronger marketing plan were in place a new owner should be able to increase room rates, which in turn would increase revenue. The comparable B and B’s in the area are charging as much as double as the current room rate of the Gunn House Hotel.
