History:
This historic home dates back to early America. The white clapboard portion of the house was built circa 1790. The original owner is recorded to have voted in the Queensbury election of 1786. The brick portion was built in several stages circa 1810 by a young professional from New York City for a summer home. There is a variety of joining styles in the brickwork, as the young bachelor brought different masons with him each time he travelled north to work on the house. The original stone walls surrounding the property were built in the 1830’s by the first African American pastor in the Methodist Episcopal Church’s Troy Conference, George S. Brown. The home has been owned by several families throughout its history. Between 2004 and 2013, the house has been completely renovated and converted to a bed & breakfast, while preserving its historic value.
Features:
The center hall style has been preserved with multi-pane deep set windows, wide pine floors, multiple fireplaces, and beamed ceilings. Acreage and mature maples add to the antique ambiance and privacy. Facing southeast, its location allows views of sunrises and sets as well as the mountain ranges of Vermont and the southern Adirondacks.
There are five guest rooms, all with en suite baths, and a two bedroom, two bath separate owners’ quarters, for a total of seven bedrooms and seven baths. There are two kitchens. One kitchen is for owner use. The other kitchen, housing Viking Range appliances and a Frigidaire commercial refrigerator, has been used to operate a bakery, as approved by the NYS DOH, and used for the bed and breakfast. Both kitchens boast granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. The air conditioning is zoned for guests’ comfort. There are three gas fireplaces. There is a front formal staircase and a back stair, historically used for maids’ quarters. Kirsch blackout shades adorn the windows, with remote controlled motorized blackout shades in each guest room. The 3.19 acre grounds include an in ground pool, surrounded by abundant perennial gardens and lush landscaping, kept vibrant by the in ground sprinkler system. The back covered porch looks on to the pool and gardens. The property has ample fencing and is bordered by a historic stone wall. There is a detached two car automatic garage for owner use and a five space paved parking lot for guest use. Owners also enjoy a separate fenced yard, with a stone path leading to the garden shed and to the garage. The laundry room has two sets of Electrolux stackable washers and dryers to accommodate a high volume of linens. There are also all new mechanicals, California closets, and a stand-by generator. The home is on Town water, but still has the historic well pumps in-tact on the property. There is private septic, which has been upgraded and expanded to accommodate the bed and breakfast operation.
Location:
Located in a Queensbury pocket of historic homes, the setting reflects the home’s roots, nestled near pristine wooded acreage bordered by country stone walls and rural views. Its proximity to the town’s amenities of public schools, churches, college, airport, medical facilities, and shopping offers a unique opportunity to live a charming lifestyle while remaining close to Queensbury’s urban offerings.
