Our historic bed and breakfast occupies the original home of Max Schutz, a successful merchant in the early days of Silver City, New Mexico. He owned one of the most successful and largest mercantile establishments in the Southwest.  In 1883, as a symbol of his success, he built one of the more pretentious homes in the city on Broadway Street.   It was built by Robert Black, Silver City’s well-known contractor and builder.
The home was built of brick. White marble and granite fireplaces were installed in all the downstairs rooms. It has a hand-carved black walnut front door and black walnut banister and newel post imported from Germany.  The downstairs rooms have 12-foot ceilings, and all the doors and windows have the original ornate molding. Two bay windows add to the elegance of this home. It has a wonderful veranda running the length of its north side.In 1926, after Max Schutz’s retirement and move to California, the property was purchased by Mrs. Mersfelder.  In December 1927, a fire destroyed much of the second story.  In rebuilding the house, the roof was raised four feet eliminating the dormers of the original design.  The outside walls were then stuccoed. In later years, the sleeping porches were closed in and during the 40’s and 50’s the home was made into apartments. In 1956, Linzee and Mary Packard turned it back into a private residence, raising six children there.

Sandra Hicks and Ron Belanger purchased the home in July 2003. They renovated the building, updating all the mechanical systems, installing new wood floors, repairing the marble fireplaces and adding new bathrooms and kitchens. Also several structural improvements were done.  All of this hard work resulting in a lovely & peaceful destination from which guests can enjoy the charm of Silver City and the natural treasures of southwestern New Mexico.
