DESCRIPTION (See also www.winterham.com; www.forsalebyowner.com #24117666; MLS #1701459)
Winterham features a unique flexibility and uncommonly generous spaces, adaptable for many uses. The historic manor home, a white frame Italianate design, consists of >4,000 sq. ft., and was built ca 1855 by a cousin of Thomas Jefferson (see winterham dot com). After a painstaking and meticulous 21st century turnkey restoration (with all modern amenities added), Winterham was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The remarkable addition of >2,000 sq. ft. of modern finished living space was created by excavating underneath the existing house. Conversion of a historic dependency into a luxury guest (honeymoon) suite and spa (The Lake Cottage) added almost 500 more sq. ft. of living space. Winterham was opened to the public in 2003 as an upscale Bed and Breakfast/Wedding and Event venue and has received rave reviews by tourists and wedding parties alike. Winterham served as a Confederate hospital at the end of the Civil War. Thomas Garland Jefferson, a son of the original owner, was one of 10 VMI cadets killed at the Battle of Newmarket.
The historic manor home consists of two floors with high ceilings, large windows and heart pine floors. There are four spacious bedrooms upstairs, each 16 x 20 ft in size. The two adjoining bedrooms in the rear of the house form the luxury "Jefferson Suite" which sleeps four. The elegant en suite bathroom contains an "Ultramasseur Tub," a double shower/steam room, twin pedestal sinks and a French bidet. The two front rooms, the "New Market Cadet Room" and the "Princess Amelia Room," both have en suite shower baths and will each sleep two. Remote controlled vented gas fireplaces with glass fronts are found in each upstairs bedroom.
On the main floor, there are four major 16 x 20 ft. rooms: a parlor, library, dining room and a state-of-the art kitchen with Viking Range, Bosch dish-washer, Kitchen-Aid refrigerator and gorgeous maple glass-front cabinets. A pantry/laundry room adjoins the ktichen. There is a spacious center hall and an ingenious cross-hall stairwell. Finally, there is a powder room and an office (originally the butler's pantry during plantation days). Striking features of the parlor and library are jib doors. Little gates open at the bottom below both window sashes which rise into a wall channel to form full walk out doors onto the verandas. A new 10 x 30 ft. covered veranda overlooking the lake has been added to the back of the house. There are four fireplaces on this floor, as well.
The new "Garden Terrace" level, excavated under the historic structure, consists of two units: The larger family suite (>1500 sq. ft.) consists of two bedrooms, a large living room/dining room, kitchenette, full bath and an equipment/storage room. Adjacent, through French doors, lies a spacious brick-lined patio shaded by a new veranda. The smaller unit (>500 sq. ft.) is a generous studio apartment with a full kitchen and bath and a private entrance. The large window wells, French doors, nine-foot tall ceilings and Brazilian walnut floors make for a surprising and inviting light-filled Garden Terrace level. The larger unit could serve as business space and the studio could house live-in helpers.
Altogether, Winterham would be an ideal space for a large, extended family. However, it functions extremely well for its present use as a wedding and event venue and B&B, because of its five large guest rooms, including three luxury suites, which will accommodate up to 22 overnight guests. Exterior vistas are world class. Winterham overlooks a 15 acre lake and 330 acres of carefully tended Watkins Nursery plantings. Across the road, there are 400 acres of loblolly pine forest and a handsome, non-working dairy barn with silos, owned by Anderson Lumber Co. Winterham is protected from future development by these longstanding family enterprises. Specimen trees, boxwood and crape myrtles enhance the grounds. A
