Marion, OH   Offered for sale at $199,900

The History of the Haven on Vine
Originally this home was constructed in 1842 by Charles
Baker, the son of Marion’s founder, Eber Baker, and is believed to be the oldest standing residence in Marion. The house, designed by abolitionist architects, was one of the four known stations of the Underground Railroad in Marion.
The four homes; Charles Baker house, Judge Bowen house
(now Laipply’s Printing), True house (now a museum) and Eber
Baker’s Mansion House Inn (no longer standing – current site of
downtown beauty school) were connected by tunnels. Another tunnel, running down Vine Street, was connected together by cisterns.
This house was built in response to the 1839 trial of “Black
Bill” Anderson, a free black man living in Marion. A group from
Virginia arrived in town and accused him of being a runaway slave. The judge, Ozias Bowen, who was believed to be hiding runaway slaves in his home at the time, ruled in favor of Anderson. A riot ensued and a group of local Quakers helped Anderson escape. It is believed that Bill Anderson was living at Eber Baker’s Mansion House Inn at the time he was arrested. The national press coverage of the trial is said to be one of the contributing factors
leading up to the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850.
In addition to being a station on the Underground Railroad,
some of the tunnels were re-purposed during Prohibition with a
tunnel connecting the house to a hidden room in the basement of what is now Fuzzy’s Flower. The house has seved as a bed and breakfast since 2011 averaging 5 stars across Airbnb, Facebook, Google and Trip Advisor with guests visiting from all around the world. The house was featured on Out ‘N About Columbus in 2015 and was once considered as to be a host site for Tree House Masters. Chapel services held in the great room have been viewed online by people in over 80 countries.
