The Red Lantern Inn

Clifton Forge, VA   Offered for sale at $525,000

The history of the Town of Clifton Forge, Virginia dates to the 1700’s when it was part of a 1770 land grant by Lord Botetourt, the Governor of Virginia. A settlement developed along both sides of the Jackson River. The iron industry in Alleghany County and the completion of the road over North Mountain in 1826 began the growth of the settlement. A nearby forge called “Clifton” gave rise to the town’s name.
The Town has a rich railroad heritage with the first passenger train arriving in Clifton Forge in 1857. Clifton Forge grew up with the railroad industry and it became a major maintenance facility for steam locomotives of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad (C&O). During the hayday of the railroad, the town was a virtual boom town with the C&O employing almost 2000 people. With the advent of diesel locomotives, the C&O Railroad transferred its maintenance shops to West Virginia and many of the jobs were transferred to the new facility. Because of its rich railroad history, Clifton Forge is the home of the Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society and the C&O Railway Heritage Center. The Town is now served by Amtrak three days a week.
Recreational opportunities abound! Nearby are Douthat State Park, Lake Moomaw, and the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, which offer camping, boating, and hiking. Canoeing and kayaking are available on the Cowpasture, Jackson and James Rivers.
The Red Lantern Inn has seven bedrooms with multiple configuration possibilities allowing for several two-room suites as well as private owner’s quarters. A large well-equipped kitchen is on the main level. Currently the kitchen is available to guests for their use. An expansive living room with an eating area is adjacent to the kitchen. There is also a very large area used as a media room. This area could be converted to private use for owners,
