Property Description
This graceful Federal building has operated as a hotel from 1805 and was known for the finest accommodations between Natchez and St. Louis. It was famous for fine food, busy gambling and the first pool hall west of the Mississippi. The historical property was built in the 1790s by one of the most prominent leaders in Upper Louisiana, Francois Vallé II civil and military commandant of Sainte Genevieve. The Southern Hotel is the largest oldest brick building in North America west of the Mississippi and is the longest operated lodging in the United States west of the Mississippi.

The Southern Hotel located in the nationally recognized Historic District, is listed as a Missouri landmark and on the National Landmark. A complete restoration began in August 1986 and the graciousness of the past was carefully blended with modern comforts opening May 16, 1987 with new plumbing, wiring, plastered walls, tuck pointed brick, wood trim, roof, 7 new chimneys, new porches and HVAC separate controls in each room. The three new additions were built about 1807, 1812 and 1818. In 1870 after the emancipation the six dormers were added to create better use of the third floor and create a more comfortable setting for women guests.

Each of the guest rooms contains a unique collection of country Victorian antiques and delightful whimsies. We've installed state of the art comfort systems and baths to provide the perfect accommodations for a quite get-away or a memorable celebration. We've also restored the large front parlors, the spacious dining room and one of the game rooms so that our guests experience all of the charms of the past. Our baths are the old fashion claw foot tubs with pedestal sinks and brass fixtures.

The new addition (wing 1812-1818) has four bedrooms, three full baths and a large family room capable of converting into two more guest rooms giving the hotel a total of fourteen guest rooms.

In 1987 the Southern Hotel opened with a full restaurant license and all restaurant equipment creating many capabilities. The original summer kitchen was completely restored by October 1998 and for thirteen years served as a garden gift shop. The gift shop was closed January 2002 and reopened April 2002 as Missouri Art Studio a gallery showing Best of Missouri Hands juried members only art.

The extensive gardens were begun 1986 along with night lighting and brick walks and has been one of the anchors for nineteen years on the Historic Garden Tour celebrated in May each year.

Completion of the 2000 square foot carriage house was September 1995. This has great living space, fully air conditioned, vaulted ceiling, complete kitchen, cable TV and a nice cedar deck over looking the gardens.
