One of the South's most historic homes, the Chesnut Cottage Bed and Breakfast became Columbia's first bed and breakfast when it began receiving guests in 1991 and has been in business continuously since that date. (26 years) Its five guest rooms provide the warm southern hospitality described by Mary Chesnut in her "Diary from Dixie" when she entertained her friends and family here including President Jefferson Davis and his wife Varina, Custis Lee, son of Robert E. Lee, and John Manning, former governor of South Carolina. Mary Chesnut wrote many pages of her "Diary from Dixie" in the rooms and porches of the Cottage.

Renovations have restored the Cottage's 1864 configuration wherever practical. Two lots offer ample off-street parking.
All editions of Mary's diary are on display in the hall bookcase, including the edition of her war-time photo album. An English style pub with heart pine paneling is located in the basement and features a collection of medicine, lager, soda, bitter, and wine bottles found on the property. We are still looking for the missing pages of the Diary.
