Originally a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 1,400 sf Sears Craftsman home, this house was built in 1914 for Edwin Kyle, son of William Kyle who was one of the founding fathers of Florence, Oregon. The Kyle family owned the only mercantile in Florence, which is now the Bridgewater Restaurant, and also had a ship building factory and a cannery in Florence. William Kyle moved to Florence around 1885 from Scotland. The house was originally located where the Dairy Queen is today on Highway 101, with a great view of the river and dunes. There was no bridge until 1936, so the only way of transportation across the river was by ferry or boat! In 1970, the house was going to be demolished to build a Dairy Queen there, so a family bought the house and moved it down to its current location today at 1155 Bay Street. It was so well constructed that it made the move with no problems. Several different families have owned this home throughout time. In 1991, it was opened as the Edwin K Bed and Breakfast after some remodeling and additions, which included raising the roof and making the 2nd floor into 4 bedrooms with baths.

There have been two previous B&B owners before the current ones, who both did major additions in 1990-1991 and 1998. With these additions, the present size of the home is now about 5,800 sf, with 7 bedrooms, 8 baths, a large kitchen, 2 front rooms, a large walk-in closet off the main bedroom, and a pantry in the main part of the house; plus a separate 1,000 sf Apartment Suite above what is now the owner’s quarters with a kitchen, bath, bedroom, walk-in closet, and large front room. With the move of the house down to Bay Street in 1970 came all new plumbing and electrical updates, as well as with each new addition came all utility updates. Also, a new roof was installed in 2014, and 3 new water heaters were installed in 2014-2015. The home has been very well maintained and is in excellent condition. The home was restored to its original Craftsman-style beauty, and still maintains the beautiful characteristics of a Craftsman home today. Although this home has been a bed and breakfast for many years, it would make a great home for a large family or multiple-family dwelling. Since it is zoned as commercial, it also has great potential for different types of business or businesses where one could also live here if they choose. The location is fantastic, being in Old Town on Bay Street, with a view of the Siuslaw River and Oregon National Sand Dunes.
