The stunningly beautiful historic “Old Double Circle Ranch” is at an elevation of 8,000 feet, and lays nestled in a secluded grassy 160 acre valley surrounded by statuesque Ponderosa trees, pinions, oak and cedar forests, and rocky hills facing up to the majestic Sawtooth Mountains. This National Forest inholding has permitted access through National Forest land just ¼ mile north of Hwy. 60. It is a hunter’s paradise with elk and mule deer appearing to drink its waters nearly every day of the week. Landowner tags or unit-wide tags are appropriated within the New Mexico Hunting Unit 13 which is best known for its trophy elk population.
Old West history abounds. The 2,600 square foot 3-bedrooms/2 baths rock house is the main residence on the Double Circle, and is a true “crown jewel” in the area. It is said to date back to 1901 when it was supposedly built by German settlers. Today, the house boasts all modern conveniences as it is fully insulated, fitted with low-E double-pane Jeld-Wen windows, and hot water baseboard heating in every room in addition to a well functioning wood burning fireplace insert. All living areas have refurbished oak floors, kitchen has a new click-on laminate floor, other areas are Spanish tile, and bathrooms vinyl. A white covered porch, accentuating the building’s early 19th century plantation style architecture, wraps around the north, south and east sides of the house, from which you may peacefully watch the sun set in the west or the elk roam. The north porch is glassed in and insulated, with a root cellar below, and heated by a decorative wood burning stove. Attached to the west wall are a 11’x16’ pantry/laundry utility room and a 5’x11’ “Sun Porch” green house with a 2-place hot tub. On the north side of the house is a very large tiled entertainment patio. The entire yard around the residence is surrounded by a 4’-5’ high natural rock built wall which prevents the elk from entering the yard.
The original 300 sf log built homestead house dates back to the 1880’s and has been insulated, wood paneled, equipped with a tile floor, and it is being used by the owners as a sauna and exercise room.
Behind the old homestead house are 2 log-built barns, one dating back to the 1880’s being used as a shop (on slab), the other (with raised wood floor) from the early 1900’s is used as a hay storage barn and equipment garage.
Across the yard from the main house is the old rock-built “cowboys’ bunk house” from the 1920’s. This 1,650 sf structure has been fully renovated, insulated, and equipped with Spanish tile and wood floors, pine wood walls and ceilings, double-pane windows, a large 8’x44’ enclosed and south-facing sunporch, and a spacious kitchen & dining hall. This 2-bedroom/1 bath building is often being rented to hunters and vacationers. The bathroom features a modern bath with shower, a Spanish tile sink counter top, and a radiant heat floor. Attached to the living quarters within this building is a newly renovated, wood-paneled and heated 180sf office presently used by the owner as her acupuncture clinic.
Directly north by the bunk house is a grid-tied photovoltaic power generating system which is capable of delivering 3,800 watts into the public electric grid.
Towards the west-end of the ranch sits the 900sf presently vacant “Ranch Manager’s Home” which has 2 bedrooms, 1 full bath, a modern kitchen, a pantry and mud room. This home was built in the mid-1990’s. A full-length covered and new 10’ wide deck spreads along the south side of the building, with an uncovered 8’ wide deck continuing along the east side of the house. The living room and mudroom have floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking miles and miles of mountainous ponderosa forests.
Behind it you will find a 1,200sf modern fully insulated workshop on slab, built in the early 2000’s, which is equipped as a carpentry shop and heated by a newer Dutchwest wood stove. Beautiful cabinetry runs along the east wall, and it is wired for 20
