A place on the Hudson and in history: Welcome to Heartsease, former home of one of Eleanor Roosevelt’s passions, the Hudson Shore Labor School, now masterfully restored to its former glory and the perfect setting for a luxury bed-and-breakfast, wellness retreat, inn or family compound. A unique example of Arts & Craft design among the great Hudson River mansions, the 7,700-square-foot main house, completely renovated in 2012, now features a gourmet kitchen, new systems, and no less than five luxury bedroom suites, each with its own bathroom, plus a remarkable third-floor owners’ suite with an enormous spa bath and sitting and meditation rooms. A lower level offers another full bath plus sauna and spa area. Balconies, gardens and patios offer a stunning view of the Hudson and across to the Vanderbilt Mansion. Meticulously preserved are all of the original details of Heartsease, including chestnut woodwork, lozenge-paned casement windows, the heart-shaped balustrade carvings that gave the house its name, and ceramic tiles made at the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, a premier source of Arts & Crafts decoration. The stunning main floor’s Moravian-tiled living room and formal dining room played host in the 1940s to vocational classes for local women when Hilda Worthington Smith, daughter of the original owner, launched the Hudson Shore Labor School. Eleanor Roosevelt was a board member and instructor at the school. In the 1950s, the house was home to a convent. Currently licensed as a bed-and-breakfast and the scene of numerous corporate events, the property is a 90-minute drive from Manhattan and includes a separate farmhouse-style building configured into two spacious apartments, further expanding income potential or allowing an owner or staff to live apart from paying guests.
