Die Heimat Country Inn is a thriving 15-17 room hospitality business in the historic Amana Colonies in rural Iowa. It is listed on the National Historic Registry and the seven villages of the Amana Colonies are a National Historic Landmark. Visitors (800,000-1 million annually) come from all 50 states and other countries to visit the colonies and attend its annual festivals and special events. The Amana Colonies are Iowa’s main tourist attraction.

Die Heimat Country Inn is located just off Interstate 80 and only 20 minutes from Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa (Hawkeyes) and hospitals as well as Cedar Rapids, Iowa’s second largest city. The Amana Colonies are nearly equidistant from the major Midwestern cities of Chicago, St. Louis, Omaha, Kansas City and Minneapolis, only a 3-5 hour drive from each. This makes it a convenient and perfect destination for a short road trip, a place to meet friends or to plan a reunion, meeting or special event.

The building was built in 1856 and served first as a stage coach stop and later as a communal kitchen for the Amana historical religious group that settled her in the 1800s. It was completely renovated in 1960 and has been a place of lodging ever since. Current owners have renovated and upgraded the building since 2014. Major upgrades include new boiler, new windows, outside re-painted, new roof, extensive landscaping, new front and back entrance steps and decks, outdoor lift installed, wood flooring and much much more.

Die Heimat is a simple wooden structure, in keeping with the Amana style, with nine guest rooms on the second floor, seven guest rooms on the first floor along with a dining room, kitchen, office, and gift shop. Innkeeper’s quarters, for a couple or single person, are an apartment in the basement. There is also a laundry room and a workshop in the other half of the basement.

Die Heimat leases and manages the Next Door Event Center, another historic building across the driveway from the inn, from the Amana Heritage Society. Reunions, weddings, retreats, business meetings and celebrations of all kinds are held at Next Door with overnight guests staying at the inn, enhancing the business.

The inn itself and the entire area are filled with history. The community is rural, with residents sharing the story of the Amana history with visitors through its museums, shops, wineries, historic businesses (Woolen Mill, Meat Shop and Smokehouse, Furniture Store, and General Store). Guests also enjoy outdoor activities, hiking trails, and local theatre.
